Recruitment Trend in AI Companies

Anthropic and OpenAI have dedicated the past year to recruiting officials from President Trump’s administration into senior roles. This hiring trend corresponds with the increasing significance of frontier AI as a matter of national security.

Key Hires by Anthropic

According to CNBC, Anthropic has added at least two former Trump officials in 2023. Chris Liddell, who served as deputy White House chief of staff during Trump’s first term, joined the company’s board of directors in February.

In September, Sihao Huang, formerly a senior policy advisor for AI and emerging technology at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, became Anthropic’s head of frontier compute strategy. He aims to plan for rapid AI progress through infrastructure expansion.

OpenAI’s Strategic Moves

OpenAI has made similar hires, confirming last week that Thomas Lind, the former AI policy lead at the Office of the National Cyber Director, is now leading cyber and strategic risk on its national security policy team. This role is crucial as AI becomes central to national security.

Additionally, Dean Ball was appointed in July as head of strategic futures, while Peter Bowman-Davis joined in March to work on model training and hardware engineering.

Significance of Political Engagement

Michelle Nie Duncan, a visiting fellow at the Center for a New American Security, noted how these hires reflect the power balance between government and the tech industry. Frontier AI companies acknowledge the Trump administration’s significant influence over their operations.

Industry Challenges and Learning

The relationship between Anthropic and the White House has faced challenges, including a recent public dispute. Duncan remarked on how such episodes have reshaped how AI companies engage with the administration.

Aiming for Blockbuster IPOs

Duncan also points out that the potential for major public offerings is driving these hiring choices. As OpenAI and Anthropic prepare for significant IPOs, officials see an opportunity to play a historic role in shaping AI governance.

Concerns About AI Governance

Anthropic’s IPO prospectus labeled the Trump administration as a business risk, acknowledging that negative sentiment could impact their relationships with commercial clients. The prospectus highlights run-ins with federal authorities and the potential for revenue loss due to these challenges.

AI Industry Landscape

As AI giants navigate the complex landscape of powerful AI models, regulatory calls, and international competition, the future of AI governance remains a critical topic for discussion.
